UNDERSTANDING THE OLD TESTAMENT
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a study of the second half of the Old Testament. In this course we will discuss the major archaeological discoveries of the O.T. setting and its impact on the scriptures; the introduction to Hebrew Poetry and Wisdom Literature; the formation to the O.T; and the introduction to the Prophetic Literature.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
► Be able to demonstrate and explain a working knowledge of the time period from Solomon’s death in 930 B.C. until the prophet Malachi in 430 B.C. and its impact on the scriptures (Knowledge).
► Be able to understand and relate the significance of the parts of the O.T. as it relates to the whole of Israelite history and scripture as a whole (Comprehension and Synthesis).
► Be able to identify and summarize the basic types of literature contained in the O.T.: Pentateuch, Historical Books, Poetic Books, Wisdom and Prophetic Literature (Comprehension and Synthesis).
► Be able to discuss the relationship between the knowledge gained in this class and his or her own theological and spiritual development (Comprehension, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation).
COURSE ACADEMICS
This course is worth four quarter units of credit in the degree programs of Embassy College.
Your Instructor
Dr. Charles Gaulden is a full professor at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. He holds a D.Min. degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He has holds graduate degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary, Erskine Theological Seminary and Chandler School of Theology.
Among the many respected positions Dr. Gaulden has held are Pastor; Missions Board President; Student Ministries President, Christian Education Director of the Assemblies of God in South Carolina and Academic Dean for Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida.
